The salaries of public employees are just that, public. Any person at any time can obtain salary information on any public employee, as the tax payers pay the salaries of these employees. The salary information of an employee with a privately held company is private and not public knowledge, as the employee is protected by privacy laws.

While the laws are written to protect employee privacy, public employees are open to more scrutiny, as much of the information regarding their employment is public.
