Beginning to Survey the Published Research Literature

Do an initial literature search on your topic. Begin by identifying three scholarly books or articles on your topic. Skim these to identify quickly what were the authors' research questions. How did they go about investigating the topic? What evidence did they use? What methods of analysis? What were their conclusions?

Look more closely at one article. See if you can describe the author's selection of cases, units, categories, analytical frames, evidence, images and representations. Get a sense of the logic of the research design.

The purpose of the literature review is to generate ideas about your topic and expose you to possible research questions and research designs. This will help you as you formulate your own questions and research strategies.
